Unless otherwise authorised and justified, Veterinary Oral Pastes comply with the requirements of the monograph on
Oromucosal Preparations. In addition, the following statements apply to Veterinary Oral Pastes that are the subject of an individual monograph in the British Pharmacopoeia (Veterinary).
DEFINITION
Veterinary Oral Pastes are semi-solid preparations containing one or more active substances in a suitable vehicle. They are administered to the oral cavity and are intended to be swallowed for delivery of active substances to the gastrointestinal tract.
Veterinary Oral Pastes are presented in multi-dose containers which are designed to allow the accurate dosing of animals according to their bodyweight.
TESTS
Dissolution
A suitable test may be carried out to demonstrate the appropriate release of the active substance(s), for example, the test using Apparatus 2 described under dissolution test for tablets and capsules, Appendix XII B1.
Uniformity of mass of delivered doses from multi-dose containers Veterinary Oral Pastes supplied in multi-dose containers comply with Appendix XII C2.
STORAGE
Veterinary Oral Pastes should be stored in airtight containers if they contain water or other volatile ingredients.
