Eur. monograph 1904)<\/p>\n<p>57-10-3<\/p>\n<p><strong>Action and use<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Excipient.<\/p>\n<h2>DEFINITION<\/h2>\n<p>Hexadecanoic acid (C<sub>16<\/sub>H<sub>32<\/sub>O<sub>2<\/sub>; M<sub>r<\/sub> 256.4), obtained from fats or oils of vegetable or animal origin.<\/p>\n<h3>Content<\/h3>\n<p>Minimum 92.0 per cent.<\/p>\n<h2>CHARACTERS<\/h2>\n<h3>Appearance<\/h3>\n<p>White or almost white, waxy solid.<\/p>\n<h3>Solubility<\/h3>\n<p>Practically insoluble in water, soluble in ethanol (96 per cent).<\/p>\n<h2>IDENTIFICATION<\/h2>\n<p>A. Freezing point (see Tests).<\/p>\n<p>B. Acid value (2.5.1): 216 to 220, determined on 0.1 g.<\/p>\n<p>C. Examine the chromatograms obtained in the assay.<\/p>\n<p>Results: The principal peak in the chromatogram obtained with the test solution is similar in retention time to the principal peak in the chromatogram obtained with the reference solution.<\/p>\n<h2>TESTS<\/h2>\n<h3>Appearance<\/h3>\n<p>Heat the substance to be examined to about 75 \u00b0C. The resulting liquid is not more intensely coloured than reference solution Y<sub>7<\/sub> or BY<sub>7<\/sub> (2.2.2, Method I).<\/p>\n<h3>Acidity<\/h3>\n<p>Melt 5.0 g, stir for 2 min in 10 mL of hot carbon dioxide-free water R, cool slowly and filter. To the filtrate add 0.05 mL of methyl orange solution R. No red colour develops.<\/p>\n<h4>Freezing point (2.2.18)<\/h4>\n<p>60 \u00b0C to 66 \u00b0C.<\/p>\n<h4>Iodine value (2.5.4)<\/h4>\n<p>Maximum 1.<\/p>\n<h4>Stearic acid<\/h4>\n<p>Maximum 6.0 per cent, determined as prescribed in the assay.<\/p>\n<h2>ASSAY<\/h2>\n<p>Gas chromatography (2.4.22, Method C) with the following modifications. Prepare the solutions as described in the method but omitting the initial hydrolysis.<\/p>\n<p>Reference solution: Prepare the reference solution in the same manner as the test solution using a mixture of 50 mg of palmitic acid R and 50 mg of stearic acid R instead of the substance to be examined.<\/p>\n<p>Relative retention: With reference to methyl stearate: methyl palmitate = about 0.9.<\/p>\n<p>System suitability:<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 resolution: minimum 5.0 between the peaks due to methyl stearate and methyl palmitate.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>General Notices (Ph.
