It dissolves in dilute solutions of alkali hydroxides.<\/p>\n<h2>IDENTIFICATION<\/h2>\n<p>Infrared absorption spectrophotometry (2.2.24).<\/p>\n<h3>Ioxaglic Acid<\/h3>\n<p>Comparison ioxaglic acid CRS.<\/p>\n<h2>TESTS<\/h2>\n<h3>Appearance of solution<\/h3>\n<p>The solution is clear (2.2.1).<\/p>\n<p>Dissolve 1.0 g in a 40 g\/L solution of sodium hydroxide R and dilute to 20 mL with the same solution.<\/p>\n<h3>Absorbance (2.2.25)<\/h3>\n<p>Maximum 0.18, calculated for a solution containing 40 per cent of anhydrous ioxaglic acid.<\/p>\n<p>Dissolve 10.0 g in about 8 mL of a 40 g\/L solution of sodium hydroxide R. Adjust to pH 7.2-7.6 with a 40 g\/L solution of sodium hydroxide R or 1 M hydrochloric acid. Dilute to 25 mL with water R. Filter through a membrane filter (nominal pore size 0.45 \u03bcm). Measure the absorbance at 450 nm using water R as the compensation liquid.<\/p>\n<h3>Related substances<\/h3>\n<p>Liquid chromatography (2.2.29): use the normalisation procedure.<\/p>\n<p>Solvent mixture acetonitrile R, water R (5:95 V\/V).<\/p>\n<p>Test solution: Dissolve 0.10 g of the substance to be examined in about 40 mL of the solvent mixture. Add 0.5 \u00b1 0.1 mL of a 4 g\/L solution of sodium hydroxide R and dilute to 50.0 mL with the solvent mixture. Shake until dissolution is complete, using ultrasound if necessary.<\/p>\n<p>Reference solution (a): Dissolve 0.10 g of ioxaglic acid CRS in about 40 mL of the solvent mixture. Add 0.5 \u00b1 0.1 mL of a 4 g\/L solution of sodium hydroxide R and dilute to 50.0 mL with the solvent mixture. Shake until dissolution is complete, using ultrasound if necessary.<\/p>\n<p>Reference solution (b): Dissolve 5 mg of ioxaglic acid impurity A CRS in the solvent mixture and dilute to 50.0 mL with the solvent mixture. Add 8 mL of 1 M sodium hydroxide. After dissolution and homogenisation, add 1.0 mL of glacial acetic acid R. Immediately titrate with 0.001 M silver nitrate, determining the end-point potentiometrically (2.2.20), using a silver indicator electrode and a suitable reference electrode.<\/p>\n<p>1 mL of 0.001 M silver nitrate is equivalent to 0.1269 mg of iodides.<\/p>\n<h3>Water (2.5.12)<\/h3>\n<p>Maximum 5.0 per cent, determined on 0.100 g.<\/p>\n<h3>Sulfated ash (2.4.14)<\/h3>\n<p>Maximum 0.1 per cent, determined on 1.0 g.<\/p>\n<h2>ASSAY<\/h2>\n<p>In a round-bottomed flask place 0.100 g of the substance to be examined and add 5 mL of strong sodium hydroxide solution R, 20 mL of water R, 1 g of zinc powder R and a few glass beads. Fit the flask with a reflux condenser and boil for 30 min. Cool and rinse the condenser with 20 mL of water R. Add the rinsings to the contents of the flask. Filter, wash the filter with 3 quantities, each of 15 mL, of water R and add the washings to the filtrate. Add 40 mL of dilute sulfuric acid R and titrate immediately with 0.05 M silver nitrate. Determine the end-point potentiometrically (2.2.20).<\/p>\n<p>1 mL of 0.05 M silver nitrate is equivalent to 10.58 mg of C<sub>24<\/sub>H<sub>21<\/sub>I<sub>6<\/sub>N<sub>5<\/sub>O<sub>8<\/sub>.<\/p>\n<h2>STORAGE<\/h2>\n<p>In an airtight container, protected from light.<\/p>\n<h2>IMPURITIES<\/h2>\n<p>Specified impurities A, B, C, D, E, F.<\/p>\n<p>Other detectable impurities (the following substances would, if present at a sufficient level, be detected by one or other of the tests in the monograph.
